Coffee Burrial

Large plantations of a single species are called “monocultures”. They use harmful industrial farming methods to obtain more "efficient" harvest, such as pesticides and fertilizers, machinery to standardize production. It benefits extractive colonial entrepreneurs. This industrial-colonial approach positions the Earth as a resource to be exploited, disregarding botanic ancestry. Coffee is an example of monoculture.

The agglomeration of pressed and discarded coffee used in this performance was collected one morning in El Raval, Barcelona, Spain. Coffee waste collection is free, although not all venues separate general waste from the coffee waste. On the day of the performance, Graquandra found a dead dove on a terrace and felt that sharing the burial would be a worthy ceremony for the dove.

This performance embodies the life which remains in the coffee grain, while forshadowing the insidious nature of the harvest.
